Make sure that the results will make sense when they're displayed

Article-style sites
- Multi-page articles: should have unique titles, weight the first page higher for results sorting.
- FAQs: don't index question list, index separate answer pages for best results
Products
- Index whole product record (title, description, details, pricing)
- Make sure title is descriptive!
Email, Usenet Newsgroups, Conferencing archives
- Index each item separately, don't index listing pages
