Solution #3: Distributed Search Standards

• Agreement on protocols

  • Transport (usually HTTP)

  • Query syntax

  • Relevance scoring (tricky problem)

  • Results with meaningful XML tags, so it's easy to merge and present them

Disadvantages

• Design by committee

• Delays in implementing new features

• Interaction can be inefficient
